Hefte von Auschwitz Nr. 18

Price per Unit (piece): PLN 11.00

This issue (in German) comprises articles on: first Poles in the Auschwitz camp, women’s escapes, sub-camps in Czechowice and Brno as well as the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp in the Nuremberg Trials.

In her article Irena Strzelecka describes the first months of the camp as well as transports, e.g. from Tarnów, Wiśnicz and Sosonowiec. The article includes the lists of two first transports from Tarnów (June 14, 1940) and Wiśnicz (June 20, 2009) as well as transports from Silesia (June-July 1940).

Tadeusz Iwaszko in his article about women’s escapees presents circumstances and methods of escapes from the camp. The author focuses on escapes from the penal company in Budy and escapes during the evacuation of the camp in January 1945.

An article of Irena Strzelecka and Tadeusz Szymański concerns the origins of two sub-camps of Auschwitz in Czechowice. The sub-camps were established in 1944 after the Allies had bombed a number of German industrial structures in Czechowice, including the refinery.

The sub-camp in Brno, that is described by Emeryka Iwaszko in her article, was the most distant in the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp complex. Probably, since the second half of 1943 prisoners of Auschwitz were constructing the Technical Academy of the SS and Police in Brno where later Germans conducted experiments with arms.

Andrzej Pankowski describes  the Nuremberg Trials against the Nazi major war criminals who were involved in crimes committed in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and death camp. The author focuses not only on history, investigation and prosecution of the Nazi war criminals or legal issues but also attempts to analyze ethical attitudes and motivation of individuals who decided about the future of millions of deportees.
