The existence of the Memorial makes it possible to encounter Auschwitz directly, with one’s own eyes. The original camp buildings and objects tell this history in a way that cannot be conveyed through the printed word or pictures. We must have the assurance that it will endure. For people who come here in the future, who will want to see this place and commemorate the victims.
In 2012, the Museum budget was 53,5 million zł (about €13 million).
Maintaining remembrance requires financial input. Upholding the authenticity of this place is an undertaking that exceeds the budgetary resources of our Museum. That is why, in addition to our own income and appropriations from the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, obtaining outside funding is so important. Thus our budget includes funds from the European Union and the Auschwitz‑Birkenau Foundation.
Grants from the European Regional Development Fund within the framework of the Infrastructure and Environmental Operational Program for the years 2007‑2013 were designated for the continuation of the conservation of wooden barracks in the former Auschwitz II‑Birkenau camp and conservation work on two original camp barracks in the former Auschwitz I camp.
The Memorial Foundation for the Victims of Auschwitz-Birkenau supported educational and publishing at the Memorial, as well as, financed many of the mutual projects directly—for a total of 90 thousand euros.
The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and Memorial imposes an obligation of remembrance and education on future generations throughout the world.
