European Seminars under the Aegis of the Council of Europe




The project fulfills a pledge made by Polish education minister Mirosław Sawicki during a Council of Europe seminar for European education ministers in Cracow and Oświęcim on May 4-6, 2005. The majority of European states elected on that day to commemorate January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. The seminar has been organized since 2006.

Purpose: visits to authentic historical memorial sites, learning about the history of the Auschwitz concentration camp and extermination center, teaching memory in the context of Holocaust Remembrance Day, preventing crimes against humanity, and preparing teachers for visits to Auschwitz with their students.


Subject: the significance of Auschwitz as a memorial site, the German occupation of Poland, Polish reactions to the Holocaust in the General Government and the territory annexed to the Reich, Allied reactions to the Holocaust, the function and significance of art created illegally in Auschwitz, the national exhibitions at the Museum.


Lecturers: historians, outstanding authorities in the field, academic faculty, research staff from the  Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim, scholars from Yad Vashem, international experts

Organizers: Ministry of National Education, Council of Europe, International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, Pedagogical Academy in Cracow.


Target audience: teachers and methodologists from member states of the Council of Europe, methodological experts from the Council of Europe, representatives of the Ministry of National Education

Duration: 7 days

Frequency: once a year


Form: lectures, workshops, visits to the Museum, meetings with former Auschwitz prisoners, tours of synagogues in Cracow and Oświęcim


Requirements for completion: participation in sessions

Certificate awarded: Polish Ministry of Education certificate of participation


Where: Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Pedagogical Academy in Cracow, Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim, Chevra Lomdei Mishnayot Synagogue in Oświęcim, International Youth Meeting House in Oświęcim.
