The International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust

The International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust was created by a decision of the Polish government in June 2005. Five months earlier, on January 27, 2005, during commemorations marking the liberation of the camp, the Act of Foundation was signed by two former prisoners of KL Auschwitz, Władysław Bartoszewski and Simone Veil, on behalf of all former prisoners. During the symbolic launch of the Center, delegations from over 40 countries, including presidents, prime ministers, and members of royal families were in attendance. Two hundred other former prisoners also signed the Act of Foundation, expressing their support for the idea of creating such an educational center in Oświęcim.

The tragic history of the past century has left the somber marks of humanity’s hatred in many parts of Europe. Over 60 years after Auschwitz, we still know and understand too little, while more often we forget about the not too distant past.

Education – History and the Present

From the beginning of the existence of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim educational work and informing people was treated as a priority; however, in the first post-war years this was mainly to hundreds of thousands of pilgrims under the care of a Museum guide.

The ICEAH Program Council

The Program Council of the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust was established on October 11, 2005, at the Ministry of Culture. The council works on advising and evaluating the Center’s educational activities.

Act of Foundation

Sixty years have gone by since the cessation
of the criminal machinery of the Holocaust and the torment
of the concentration camps.

The years are passing.
There are fewer and fewer of us
who survived the concentration camp,
who profoundly understand its message and significance.

Partners of the ICEAH

The International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust conducts educational activities in cooperation with Polish and foreign institutions, as well as partner organizations, dealing with issues related to the activities of the Museum.

Structure

The International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust works under patronage of the International Auschwitz Council and its Education Commission. The activities of the Center are supervised by the director of the Museum, and are led by the deputy director for education.
